Back-to-school time means nerves and excitement for children and adults. It’s a little different for the parents, however. Back to school means the children are leaving the house every day and beginning to venture out into the world on their own. Keeping them safe while they are out from under the wing of their parents is a common concern, so here are some tips from security companies in Miami that everyone can follow.

Safety Rules For Children:

  • If a child walking to school, plan the route ahead of time and stick to that route. Straying from the route can not only disorient the child, but can also make them more vulnerable.
  • Traffic laws are in place for a reason and should be followed at all times. Make sure children are only crossing the street at designated crosswalks.
  • When waiting for the bus or walking to school, make sure children stay out of the street. You can’t be responsible for the visibility of drivers, but you can be responsible for where your children are standing or walking.
  • Make sure your children know not to accept rides to or from school from strangers.
  • If your child is riding a bike to school, they need to know the rules of the road. Advise them of road sign meanings, the flow of traffic, how traffic lights are used and when it is safe for them to cross the street.
  • Children need to listen and obey all rules given by their school and teacher. This can prevent them from being in places they shouldn’t while also being where school officials can account for them.
  • If a school uses digital security systems, the child is to obey the rules set in place for their proper usage.
  • Make sure your child knows to never leave school grounds without their teacher, a parent or someone who has been previously designated by a parent. If they go off on their own, they can’t be accounted for.

Safety for Motorists:

  • As a motorist, please be aware that children are on their way to school and be on the look out. Children can be unpredictable and don’t always cross the street where they’re supposed to.
  • Yield to school buses. When a bus is stopped with flashing lights and an extended red sign, you must stop. Children are entering or exiting the bus and may be crossing the street in front of the bus.
  • Stop at crosswalks when a crossing guard instructs you to. They are allowing children to cross the street, and failure to stop could be deadly.
  • Never pass a bus on the right. Not only is it illegal, but it could also be deadly.
  • Obey the signs in school zones. They often have flashing lights to grab your attention. They are there for the safety of both you and the children.

Safety starts at home, meaning you are responsible for teaching your children basic safety. These tips provided by security companies in Miami are only effective if you teach them and put them to use. Schools may have digital security systems in place to better keep everyone safe, but children can only be responsible for what they know and are taught. When they know better, they do better.
