Avoiding Fires in Grilling Season

Posted by Omega Security on June 24, 2013

Few things herald the dawn of summer like firing up the grill for the year's first cookout. Unfortunately, while June and July are the most active time for grillers, they're also the peak months for grill-related fires. Although grilling is generally a safe and enjoyable activity, an accident or defective piece of equipment can quickly turn a cookout into an inferno. Thankfully, there are several steps you can take yourself to make sure your next cookout is as safe as possible. Accidents can happen at any time, however, and a home security service with fire alarm monitoring can be a lifesaver in a fire emergency.

Before dusting off the grill and firing it up, be sure to inspect it closely for any potential safety issues. Gas grills are much more susceptible to fire than charcoal or other solid fuel, and the leading statistical cause is a propane leak. Be sure to closely inspect the grill, tank and tank hose before using the grill for the first time each year. After inspecting each item visually, mix a small amount of water and dish soap and apply it to the length of the tank hose. When you turn the gas on, any leaks will cause the soap to bubble. If a leak is detected, immediately turn the gas off and have the grill serviced professionally before operating. If you notice a leak while cooking, immediately leave the area and call the fire department. Do not attempt to shut the gas off yourself because a fire could start at any moment.

Whether you're using a gas or charcoal grill, ensure that all pets and children are kept several feet away while the grill is lit. Similarly, never leave the grill unattended while cooking, and do not operate it within several feet of your home. If a fire becomes out of control, it can easily spread to a house, tree or other nearby object. Also thoroughly clean the grill after each use to prevent buildup of flammable grease and fat on the grates and on the trays underneath the grill. When using a charcoal grill, be sure to use only lighter fluid that is specifically intended for charcoal grills. After using the fluid, place it well away from the grill and other heat sources and out of the reach of children.
